Jay Stay Paid

I recently had a friend tell me I didn't listen to hip hop anymore. Since then, i've made a conscious effort to listen and look out for it. With that being said, I heard Jay Stay Paid and thoroughly enjoyed it.

"Curtailing any notion of jumping on some sort of Dilla bangwagon, Jay Stay Paid was executive produced by Dilla’s mother Maureen Yancey (aka Ma Dukes) along with the musical supervision of Dilla’s only real musical idol, Pete Rock. “It wasn’t rushed and it wasn’t haphazard,” explains Ms Yancey. “This album combines what he did in the beginning of his career, what he did in some of our early hospital stays, which was very deep, and some stuff pulled from old floppy disks & DATs. Its mind blowing…this is like the missing links to Dilla’s legacy.”

The format of the album plays like a radio show with Pete Rock as the program director. With regards to Pete’s involvement, Ms. Yancey gets very excited, “Dilla wanted to pattern himself behind Pete. His dream was to become as close as possible to what Pete stood for. Pete meant everything to him. Dilla would have just been flabbergasted! ” Pete’s sentiments were the same toward Dilla, “Dude was amazing. He just kinda came outta nowhere and the more you heard his beats the better they got. He may not be here with us, but it’s all good we’re going to keep his music alive and well.”

Macaframa

Finally. The crew that persuaded me get into track bikes right out of the gate rather than freespinning has finally made their first and only full length bike film available to the public. After months of music rights conversations since the American premier dates, MACAFRAMA is out.

Dust your wallet off, $40 hollar for dvd x book.

All good when you break it down. By riders, for riders to the core and a book that is sure to be DIY heaven with names like Hufnagle and Cadence attached.

San Fran gets the frontseat as Bay Area riders Colin Arlen and Colby Elrick shot/rode/produced this innovation in track bike filming. Great cinematography coupled with an equally just soundtrack make the fourty dollars incredibly easy to spend; that is if you even have to bitch about two 20 dollar bills after you hop off your custom frame / njs build or otherwise madly built human powered machine.

Just cop it, and shut it.

Hudson Mohawke - Polyfolk Dance EP

This guy can make a beat, and not give much of a care to a measure. Straight out of Scotland (Europe's Compton), this dude puts out the jams on Warp. The album art is wicked and the hand/letters work great; not to mention the 'o's are nipples. That much is free. Here is a dope video of him and his boyz in the studio running down a track and his/their gear... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTKd3CnenC8 ... Scotland on lock...again.

Weapons Dealing on Easter

It is Easter Sunday 2009, and The Lost Boys just got out of brunch at a spot in Echo Park on Sunset that served delicious food and was swarming with attractive women. After eating food and drinking mimosas, we set course to Chinatown (C-Town)...
Trevor and I went deep the rabbit hole that is the markets of C-Town. We found a store that sold sunglasses on its outer shop tables and ventured inside to see that the two gentlemen running the store were selling other things as well...Weapons, just shy of a table display of Mack 10's.
We stood and watched with gawking faces as they demonstrated two different pieces of electronics. One was a thing that would electrocute a human and send them to the ground, non-fatal. The next was a stungun that would "take down grizzly bear"according to the dealer, and absolutely kill a human. The demonstration made me back away a few steps as it was loud and largely intimidating. I asked him to put them away so i could talk guns. He put the things away and I said, "what can you give me for $5?"
He turns and grabs a stack of 4 guns to choose from and a cardboard box full of throwing stars (3 for $1). I pick out a gun and buy it, he puts it in a bag. Trevor and I walk away. I quickly say, "follow my lead" as I turn around and go back into the store.
"Now, show me what i can do for $20"
Again. 4 guns to choose from and we walk out with a Glock 4. We leave and Trevor smokes a cig as I rush to an ATM. I take out $40 as the man told me that he would hook up a nice discount next time I came in, surely talking about a few weeks down the road and not the same day. We make it back to the store, "alright, no more messing around...I want a nice gun. A heavy gun. show me what you can do for me for $40."
The man pulls out three things:
1) A shotgun like the one from Terminator 2
2) An mp5a5 automatic machinegun
3) A full sized hunting shotgun
"Whoa guys, this is all way too much gun.", I say as I hold a shotgun in each hand like I'm Scarface. "I need something I can keep on me; in my belt, on my body. I need to be able to conceal the weapon. This much is important." (verbatim what was said)
The guy boxes up the big guns and put them away.
"What are you looking for?", He asks.
I take one breath, "I know exactly what I want, obviously. I want the weapon of an agent. Give me a pp7."
"James Bond gun?"
I say, "Yes, 007."
At this point the business juncture happening in this scummy toy store has turned quite serious and all words are spoken and chosen very carefully.
He pulls out a silver Walther PP7 with a wooden handle, places it on the counter and loads it. He then proceeds to tell me to shoot it. At this point, I am standing in on of the most bizaar, comical situations I may have ever been in.
I aim at a target in the corner and unload the clip (the gun is green gas, semi auto, 20 rounds or so) on the target. No. I did not take a single shot, I took 20 in the matter of <5 seconds in front of the man at the counter. There was smoke coming from the barrel. I place the, now empty, weapon on the counter and said "This is the gun. I would like one."
He brings out a brand new one in a box.
I now barter the price and furthermore told him to trade me the $5 gun I purchased 12 minutes prior to this; my third gun. He says "Sorry, no do that."
I quickly turn and sell it to the closest kid standing next to me....$5 CASH IN HAND. Kid leaves the store. The man then takes 20 or so dollars off the marked price of the weapon and tells me it's mine for $39. I give him $40, tell him to throw in a can of gas and he does. I thank the gentleman and walk into the craziness of the market with my gun in hand.
(the story above is, obviously, not about buying a real gun)

Komeda "Nonsense"

I don't like your company, so sick of you
Don't wanna be your friend no more, leave me alone
How could I be so stupid to have faith in you?
You're the one to blame for all that has gone wrong

I'm going, gone and I'm finally out
But I'm not feeling lonely
I'm going, gone and I'm finally out
And I am feeling so fine

How could I be so stupid to have faith in you?
You're the one to blame for all that has gone wrong
I should have know that all you said was a big lie
I'd rather do nothing than spend time with you

I'm going, gone and I'm finally out
But I'm not feeling lonely
I'm going, gone and I'm finally out
But I'm not feeling lonely
I'm going, gone and I'm finally out
But I'm not feeling lonely
I'm going, gone and I'm finally out
And I am feeling so fine

I don't like your company, so sick of you
Don't wanna be your friend no more, leave me alone

Soap on a Bar

One of my co-workers, a black guy, just came in and threw me 'bones' (this is when you put a fist out to butt fists with a friend). The inertia of him walking to me then stopping made the wind of his body continue to my nose and i am 99% sure he uses Lever 2000 bar soap. thats how intense it was. The color of his skin has nothing to do with the story...but makes the imagery a bit easier to grasp.

People Scrutiny

...we had a very detached conversation about "heres and theres" during the meal and at one point Will told me that he isn't getting very many comments on a new pair of Nike 90's he got. I said that I have been getting plenty about mine in which he replied, "Well. I don't hang out with people who care about Nike's." in which to furthur trump me rather than continue a normal conversation. This brings me to two thoughts... 'Why would you rank your friends on if they liked Nike shoes or not?' & 'Well then why in the fuck do you care about your lack of comments?' Will has been confused a lot lately (in my eyes) and acting a bit elitist about his new friends; not hanging out with or contacting any of his friends from college. I, personally, do not choose my friends on what they like or dislike about my clothing. What I wear is what I wear for personal expression of myself and I like how that looks. When a stranger says "Nice shoes" or when a friend says "Nice shoes" it is the same comment and I am just happy to have them. 2009 must be the year of digesting the wasteful things in my life, because that course has been ran very effeciently thus far. Good Bye Will.

Bruges .. Shoes?

Hey all...Sitting here in the hotel in Bruges, Belgium and all I have to say for myself (other than Belgian beer being no less than 8%) is that this place has way way too many shoes. It is clear that the shops here are catering to the active tourist, as every other window is strewn with brand after brand and shoe after shoe. It took me about 1/4 of a block before I was completely desensitized from all of the foot shopping here. The brands weren't all that great (the picture above was actually from a store in Amsterdam, a store that I glady spent my time in), the styles didn't wander far (at all) from 'euro', and the prices were nothing to pull the wallet out about. This city is one of the helping factors of making my life a more appreciated and simple thing upon my return. I do not need to leave a place with a pair of sneakers to ensure that I have proper memories of being there. I do not need to exit a city with a certain amount of money spent (wasted?) on clothes to offer me the memory of being there. Rather, all I would choose to hold is the favorite picture I took in my hand proving that the trip acutally happened because while on foot in Europe there is so much more to life than shopping at a store with a (more than capable) website.

Amsterdam by Bike

Walking around Amsterdam has made me miss my bike a lot. This city has more bikes than I have ever seen in a city barnone. All of the bikes are outfitted to ride in the amount of rain this city gets. Short post, I just wish that I had a chance to let my bike visit Amsterdam as well. At the end of the day, it's just great being here regardless. Hey guys!!

Underground

Landed in London early this afternoon at an airport that is miles north of the city. Transit by rail made the progression of grassy fields, sheep farms, and quaint english homes into the factorys and multi-complex housing seem like a timelapse; very very cool. As I mentioned in an earlier post, Berlin had a dope public transit system .. then I arrived in London. The famous London Underground rail system is the most thought out and easy to use line I can even imagine. Other than the fact that this city is SO DAMNED HUGE, once you figure out where you need to go it is effortless. This brings me to needing to give a BIG UP to Rodney!!! If it wasn't for this UK local who literally took me under his wing while he was on his way into London (with his equally as friendly wife) and walked me through what line I were needing to take, standing in line for at least 20 minutes to get my ticket and before all of this guiding me to the right people to ask whether or not we needed a visa to travel to Amsterdam. Thanks again Rodney, hope you are reading this. Anyway, its time to head back into the city for I only have a mere 20 hours to enjoy what will most likely be one of the premier places I visit on the next European vacation...

Back in America

Yesterday was the last day of classes at the Berlin University and instead of going out alone in the city I crashed two day classes. They were both English speaking and entailed a lot of discussion about media, music, film, etc. relating America to International popularity and the root of all of this. In the first class they are focusing on the series 'The Wire' and we watched a full episode on a projection screen. In the middle of the viewing I had the strangest feeling where I forgot that I was even IN Germany and was watching a popular American TV show. Weird things, but damn it felt great to be back in the classroom setting. Thinking is really really nice, I took notes.

Berlin Beer Fest

I ran around the city all day on Wednesday and decided to end the day with a kick-it session of German beer. The market has a beer isle that is all unrefrigerated bottles of German beer than is dirt cheap (0,75 euro/bottle). I was locating some brie and was shopping with a hand basket filled with miscellaneous bottles. Sidenote : I was not wearing contacts or glasses, so my vision was therefore affected but made the selections truely random and fair. Returning to my temporary abode, I started cracking bottles. They were all good. Some smelled like meat and others smelled like wheat; literally, meat and wheat. Berliner Kindyl won my favorite taste and had me sleeping like a baby.

Berlin by Bus

Arriving in Berlin was a nice thing for a lot of reasons. First being that I was obviously over flying in a plane for a total amounting just over 13 hours. Second, I would be in Europe for a few weeks starting in a country I have never been to. Arriving late due to multiple delays, I got my backpack from the baggage claim effortlessly and then walked into the main area of the airport. Taking a few steps, I look around and see buses everywhere. Not a lick of english anywhere, but one of them is bound to be driving back to Berlin. This would shape the next couple of days transportation and luckily I was able to figure out the bus system here quite well. The buses loop multiple (8-10) lines here every 2-8 minutes. It is a shame that Los Angeles doesn't have their bus system on lock like this, for a very high percentage of the people living here ride these buses and don't drive a car. Anyway, Berlin has been great and very nice with its crisp temperatures.

Flying, Not Really Sleeping

A video I made of 160+ stills shot on photobooth then placed in final cut all the while racing a dying computer battery. It worked out. I guess?

Well .. Didn't Take Long .. No Suprises.

Alright, as some exposition for those who don't know I am currently in the middle of the teenage girls' Twilight book series. This is something that I am very careful about when reading in public as the following rules are always followed:
1)When I take the book out my backpack I always make sure it is frontcover faced down.
2)If I, for any reason, must put the book down on a table it is set down (again) frontcover faced down and always has the spine butted up against a stable "blocker" object.
3)If the book I am on is a hardcover, I remove the cover as to cloak the books identity with its crushed black fabric cover with no writing anywhere but the book title on its spine.

The following information is also useful in this quick story:
-I am fiercely close to finishing "New Moon" right now, the second book in the series.
-I am flying from the Burbank airport to Seattle (where one would fly if they were traveling to Forks, the town in which the book takes place).
-I hold a silver elite status card for Northwest Airlines which helps me attain free upgrades to first class seating on domestic flights.

So, running it down; I sit in first class along with the other first classers and begin reading my book (as secretly as possible) before the plane even leaves the ground as I stopped at a very intense part last night when my laundry was done drying at the laundrymat and had to go back to real life. There is a woman with a British accent sitting next to me which puts me in a defensive mood since Harry Potter is British and that book is the leading enemy of the Twilight series. The woman is very friendly, we both drink black coffee as the plane is taking off and I am very into my book until the woman interrupts me. "Are you reading Twilight?", the kind woman asks in her educated accent.
"Um no, I am not. This is New Moon, it's the book after Twilight. Where are you travelling to? London?"
"No, I work and live in Los Angeles and am up in Seattle for the day for work. I will be back in LA this evening.", she rebuts in our quickly competitive conversation then quickly mocks me, "Where are you traveling to? London?"
Oh no you didn't, I think to myself. But quickly find my out and feel that this game is in the bag.
"No, I am actually travelling to a small town in Washington to help with some research for the filming of the movie based on this book I hold in my hands here. You see, I am obviously too old to be reading this book recreationally and unlike you my business in this small town will hold me there far longer than just today. This is a pretty big deal and I need to finish this book before I land. I am on a deadline, do you mind?", I obviously just lied about the reason I am reading the book and my real destination. The woman goes back to her powerpoint presentation that she is working on on her laptop PC and leaves me alone to my dreamworld -!!!SPOILER ALERT!!!- where Bella is (ironically) aboard an airplane to Italy to save her vampire ex-boyfriend who is about to commit social and ultimately literal suicide. This is the first time that a stranger has caught me off guard reading this teen novel and that clearly threw me into a tailspin of lies. I now await re-boarding my plane and finishing the 2nd book to move onto the 3rd as I head to Amsterdam. I really hope that Edward, Bella, and Alice get out of Volterra alive.

Back In Action

It has been since the summer months that I have graced the blog with any kind of words. This lead to some problems immediately. It had been so long since I wrote here that I no longer knew my screen-name or password, but I have obviously figured it out since then. And thank you Bill Gates for holding it down for so long, funny that your release of mosquitoes (as some of you know, they used to be my least favorite thing in the world until I met the car horn in LA..) also opened the gates to my return to the rice and cholo blog. I am back with a reason...reason being is that I am sitting in the Burbank airport right now awaiting a flight that will end in me standing in Berlin, Germany for the remainder of the month of February. I will be travelling to 4-5 different countries, I will encounter 4 different languages of which I speak only one (English), and I will board countless trains, plains, and walk alot of "kilometers" with a backback on my person. With each day I am gone, I would be delighted to share something about the trip or thoughts that enter my consciousness. This month will be an experiment of self and will surely be one of the best experiences I have ever had up to this point in my (already interesting) life. Thanks for coming out again, guys and I hope to hear some comments, suggestions, or pointers during the trip. Much Love but I have to hop aboard this airplane now. Emergency Exits are my only way out for the rest of the month...

Blankness

I have nothing today, really. Just this picture of a young Bill Gates that I came across on Saturday afternoon. Truely incredible. Enjoy. And grab some Benga if you want to get a fill of some afro-dub-step-UK beats.

Long Island No More

Lyle came to me on the sabbath. Not to make my day better or to ask if I wanted to go get breakfast. Lyle came bearing bad news. Lyle came with reality. Lyle had watery eyes. Lyle said, "Did you hear about the travesty of Bozeman? The pour house is being turned into a cocktail bar."
The Pour House is, or was, the greatest bar in the small mountain town. A place where you could enjoy spending time with hippies and ladies and friends. Needless to say, that bar should be turned into a museum; a memorial for a place where many birthdays are thrown and you could guarentee that friends would meet there every thursday to enjoy a long island iced tea for 3 dollars. Yeah sure, go ahead and have as much as you'd like.
I am frustrated that I now have an excuse to not go back to Bozeman to visit. Where would I go to hang out?
Rest in Peace Pour House, you will be missed.

Home Sweet Home

Just landed back home in G-Dale (aka the picture seen above taken in the 1930s) after the first week of work on a film down south but north of San Diego. It feels incredible to be back in what finally feels like my home. Driving into LA on the I-5 at 5am was breathtaking seeing the KA skyline of LA. What a great time to live the dream.

Panda Bear

Get a load of some Panda Bear. Single man side project from Animal Collective. Very basic, but much more of a acid surfer sound. Think Animal Collective x Beach Boys "Pet Sounds". "Person Pitch" is great, but it all is beyond swell. Hope you are doing awesome!

Lupus

I am currently staying in a hotel in Southern California. The lights outside are yellow, but not in tint. They are just completely yellow. Coming home from a day on set with a bunch of people is bliss having some down-time alone. So, I go out to the parking lot everynight to listen to music on headphones and decompress after a day on set. What I have found is that it's near impossible to chill out when everyone walking into or away from the hotel look like they have a disease with their kidneys shutting down making their skin appear to be a yellow tint. I just need to head out there with a mirror to look into, showing me that I look like everyone else and all is just fine and dandy and lupus free.

Pool Sharking

I am currently working on a feature film that is funded by a church. I am sure that it wil be rated PG. After working our day today in the church, one of the guys from the camera department (the first assistant, to be exact) ran a girl in a game of pool.
The table, rickety. The girl, no older than 12 years old.
When I say that he ran her, I mean it. It was sad to see, as he refused to pull back and take it easy on her. When I got to the table, he was working on the eight ball; with six of her balls still on the table. After sinking his winning shot, he says "alright, rack em' up."
NO JOKE.
This dude just got done with a 13 hour day and was schooling a poor little Christian girl in a game of pool. She tries to rack the balls, and he steps in (because she didn't know how to) to rack them for her. This time, he lets her try and break. She breaks weak, and he jokingly says that she needs to "maybe learn a little english" before he runs the table down yet another time. I laughed saying "this is definitely bloggable" aloud. He didn't know anything about the 'rice and cholo' blog obviously and joked back.
Well, here I am finishing the blog and it was/is definately for real.
Lesson learned : 'If you are playing a kid in any game, take it easy on them. Especially if it is a parlor game, for kids don't generally have enough time spent in parlors to hone their skills; little own learn english.'

Lazer Tag

I haven't played since i was about as old as these kids. It always smelled like rotting flesh and body odor in there but I always had a great time. You could cheat and agg on the douchebag in there who was actually taking the game really seriously. I'm sure he drove himself there on his BMX and listened to a tape walkman of INXS while drinking endless amounts of slushpuppies but who am I to guess and/or judge. All that matters is that everytime I went into a lazer tag place I left with a stoked mentality and maybe a few carpet burns. My suggestion is to get back on the train and play again as the "adults" we all are now. See if we can't find the now grown up douche who still gets angry at cheating. If he isn't there, at least there will be more frozen fruit flavored drinks for all of us.

Cuba Has Its Own Food

???
Since when? Ate at a joint with the Broseph's tonight. The menu: Pretty over priced and bit over-eclectic for my tastes. So, I brush that off and just get a sandwich. The sammy wasn't bad, but I would definitely not write home about it; instead I'll just blog with rant. Cuba Libre: go there only between the hours of 5:30-7:00. Thats their happy hour and its both affordable and cheap. So, try it out...but only when the food is priced at its value. Word.

Feed The Animals

So, Gregg Gillis (aka Girl Talk) has released a "pay if you want to" new album. For those of you who like mash-ups, rap, party music, or just a orgy of sound pick it up. www.illegalart.com is where you can find it, and opt to pay or not. Grab it and then get the past albums if you already haven't. Nightripper (2006) contains some of the most fun mashed up tracks ranging from current radio hits back to Elton John, Smashing Pumpkins, etc. Basically he makes tracks sound better than they already stood. Last words : Do yourself a favor and check him live. The venue turns into a house party, and clothes are ripped off in sweat.
Check it all.

An Evening With Martin Dosh

It was Friday afternoon, I was hanging out with Jordan and said, "Hope you don't mind, but there is a Sunday Surprise planned for the end of the weekend, FYI." Jordan was baffled and set back a little bit. "What in the world man?" he said and that was really it. Friday night was a little bit of drinking and then to the house we went to mellow out and rest. In pre-sleep hang out I 'acted' as if I was drunk and totally let out the surprise. So, with a slight slur (as to not over-act it) I say, "Have you ever seen those pottery painting places, where you paint your own pottery and then they glaze it for you?"
"Yes, I know what your talking about." Jordan answered back. I then said, "Well thats a little hint for you as to what the surprise is."
Two days go by until Sunday afternoon when Jordan asked if I remembered telling him what the surprise was. I said no and he felt comfortable in knowing that he knew what it was and I had no idea about it. So, we get home and the sun goes down. The Lost Boys (my roommates) are also in the know on the surprise that we would be going to see Dosh live that evening. We called it "the comedy club". So off to the "night of comedy we go" and on the road we drove. The whole way, we were lost and had a hard time finding the club Spaceland where Dosh would be playing that evening. The whole time Jordan is questioning why we were lost as we go to the same comedy theater every Sunday night of every week of every month. We say that tonight it was taking place elsewhere and sorry that we are having a hard time getting there. It was totally believed and casual until we pull up to a small venue with a marquee on the wall. "SUNDAY NIGHT:DOSH".
"What? Dosh is playing, Sunday. Tonight is Sunday. Dosh is playing tonight. We should... What? Are we about to see Dosh?!" The Lost Boys all break out in complete laughter as Jordan is bamboozled and confused and irate at the fact that we were indeed about to see Jordan and my favorite musician of all time. For the first time.
Once in the club, which was modeled behind a UFO, we stood through two INCREDIBLE shows before Dosh came on at about 11:45p. The show was the best thing I have ever seen, and I am sure that I shed at least one tear during the performance.
What a night for surprises, what a night for music, and what a night for friends. Overall, I would basically recommend for anyone to go catch Dosh live, or at least pick up a few of his albums. The music will meld the mind with a sense of astonishingly great creativity amongst other things.

Thank you Dosh for a show that will never be forgotten. Thank you for encoring with the only song I told you that I would love to hear. And thank you Jordan, Kyle, and Nick for being there to experience the night together. Friendship expedition, out.

Depression

When people get depressed, sometimes they are vocal about it.  Other times they hold it inside and bottle it up until something horrific happens.
The other day, my friend told me that he was depressed.  I gave him suggestions to be more positive.  I made compliments that maybe weren't true, but I knew that he would like to hear them anyway.  I told him about my blog and he said he would check it out sometime if he had a chance.  So, here I am now and now our friends know about his big secret and he will read about himself on an important website.  I hope that he will feel good knowing that someone cares enough about him to share his life stories.

Truth Theory

"My theory is that if I write specific truth that some people know is word by word honesty, then they will think that all of these stories are true."

Throw a Kit On That Bitch

"I just bought a ped."
"OH NO!"
"OH YES!"
was the conversation I had with one of my best boys in Chicago.  He snaked a 90s tomos off ebay and will soon be the proud owner of a moped.  Jelousy sets in.  Gas prices feel heavier.  And I just want to go purchase a helmet and drop a lease on a Ruck*.
"What you planning on doing with that thing?"
"..." I thought he had left his house to charge the streets of Chicago with earbuds in and helmet locked.  Life has a serious new hobby.  But wait...
"Damn.  I just talked to the guy I bought it from.  Redneck.  Epic."
*Honda Ruckus - a 49cc moped with external framing and dual external can lights.
